Ekaterina Samarina. Saint-Petersburg, Russia

My name is Samarina Ekaterina. She was born and raised in the north, in Murmansk, studied in Veliky Novgorod. Now I live in St. Petersburg. Artist, graphic designer, photographer. In 2013 she graduated from the Yaroslav the Wise Novgorod State University with a degree in Graphic Design. Since 2014 I have been living in St. Petersburg. Every year I participate in exhibitions of the youth section of the Union of Artists of Veliky Novgorod, I also exhibit my works in other cities of Russia: such as Murmansk, St. Petersburg. In 2019, my personal exhibition was held in St. Petersburg. I participate in international photography exhibitions – the last one was held in Italy in the summer of 2020. In a number of my works, I have illustrated and designed children’s books. I am also professionally engaged in graphic design, working with advertising agencies.

I have been painting all my life, and for me creativity is a natural state, my answer to everything that I feel, I experience. It is important for me in my works to convey mood, state, feelings and emotions through color, spot, line. It is also important for me that what the work carries in itself, because the inner light and life of the work itself makes me look in a new way at what I am doing and realize what the viewer feels.

For me, not only my teacher-artists, with whom I studied painting, are important, but also contemporary artists and masters of the past. Expressionists, impressionists, masters of classical painting are close to me in spirit. I draw my inspiration, first of all, from nature, since she is a master of the highest class in depicting the amazing beauty of the world.

I perceive creativity as a natural extension of myself and just do what I do. I believe that art is both a soul invested in a work and a technical skill.

I am one of those people who learn to see beauty everywhere: it is thanks to this that it becomes possible to embody ideas, just by looking around. If I go outside, I always take with me either paints with a notebook, or a camera, as there is always something or something worthy of being photographed or copied. 🙂 And later, when I’m at home, I transfer the sketch to the desired format, or – which also happens – I put it aside until it waits for its moment. And if something comes up, then I immediately make a sketch, while from the very beginning I try to translate it into the right concept and in the necessary material.
